New chair appointed to regional health research body

(9 Oct 2009) Dr Steven Gieseg (Biological Sciences) has been appointed the 2010 chair of the Health Research Society of Canterbury (HRSC). He takes over from Professor Tim David (Mechanical Engineering) who has held the post for the past year.

HRSC was originally formed in 1971 under the name the Christchurch Medical Research Society. Its role is to provide a forum for the presentation and promotion of health research in the Canterbury region. The majority of the society’s members are from UC, the University of Otago Christchurch School of Medicine and the Christchurch Hospital.

Dr Gieseg, who specialises in the study of heart disease and free radicals, has been a member of the society since 1995 and has served on the executive a number of times.

“The society is looking forward to a year of events both at the Christchurch School of Medicine and the University of Canterbury such as the traditional lunchtime and evening research seminar meetings. We also hope to repeat this year’s highly successful poster meeting which was attended by over 80 researchers from Christchurch,” Dr Gieseg said.

Dr Greg O'Beirne, senior lecturer in Department of Communication Disorders, continues as treasurer while Dr Maggie-Lee Huckabee (Communication Disorders and Van der Veer Institute for Parkinson's and Brain Research) steps down after two years as secretary. The new secretary is Darin O'Keeffe from the Medical Physics and Bioengineering Department at Christchurch Hospital.
